Abstract

The production of fruits and vegetables in India is diverse and constantly changing, but so far, post-harvest losses (PHL) in perishable horticultural commodities are an important issue related to agricultural sustainability and socio-economic efficiency in India. In the present study, secondary data are used for understanding the level of losses of guava production system and its economic losses in the state of Rajasthan. The study calculates losses between 18-30 percent, depending on the stage of the value chain, from data collected from national and international institutions. These losses have a significant impact on the farmer's income, price volatility and the efficiency of the supply chain. The study pinpoints gaps in infrastructure and inadequate handling systems and market linkages. Concludes with recommendations for policy change in post-harvest systems and gives a basis for future empirical research......
