The Psychological Impact of Social Media Addiction Among University Students in Africa
Main Article Content
Abstract
The growing reliance on social media among university students has raised concerns about its psychological effects, particularly in Africa. This study examines the impact of excessive social media usage on mental health, academic performance, and interpersonal relationships among university students in Ghana and Kenya. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research identifies patterns of addiction, anxiety, and depression associated with social media overuse. Findings reveal a strong correlation between high screen time and decreased academic focus, with many students experiencing social isolation and reduced productivity. The study suggests strategies for promoting digital well-being and responsible social media use among students.
