Sustainable Tourism in the Himalayas: Balancing Development and Conservation
Main Article Content
Abstract
Tourism in the Himalayas offers significant economic opportunities but also poses serious environmental threats due to overdevelopment and ecosystem degradation. This study examines sustainable tourism practices in the Indian Himalayan region, focusing on the balance between economic growth and environmental conservation. We conducted interviews with local stakeholders, including tourism operators, government officials, and environmentalists, and analyzed the impact of tourism on biodiversity, water resources, and local communities. Our findings suggest that while eco-tourism initiatives have gained momentum, poorly regulated development continues to threaten fragile ecosystems. The paper advocates for stricter environmental policies, community-based tourism models, and sustainable infrastructure to ensure long-term ecological and economic benefits.
