Abstract

Background:Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) are common dental emergencies that require immediate and appropriate management to improve prognosis and prevent long-term complications. Adequate knowledge, attitude, and clinical practice among dental students are essential for effective emergency care. This study assessed the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding the management of traumatic dental injuries among undergraduate dental students and interns.

Aim:To assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding the management of traumatic dental injuries among dental students.

Materials and Methods:A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted among approximately 200 undergraduate dental students (3rd-year, 4th-year) and interns. A structured Google Forms questionnaire collected demographic details and assessed participants' knowledge, attitude, and practice related to TDI management. Data were analyzed using SPSS software with descriptive statistics and the Chi-square test, considering p < 0.05 as statistically significant. Ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Ethics Committee

Results:Interns demonstrated significantly better knowledge and clinical practice than 3rd- and 4th-year students. Awareness of TDIs, treatment guidelines, appropriate storage media for avulsed teeth, record-keeping practices, workshop attendance, and previous clinical exposure were significantly higher among interns (p < 0.05). Although attitudes toward TDI management were positive across all groups, gaps remained in practical knowledge, particularly among junior students. No significant differences were observed regarding extra-oral time for replantation, splinting duration, prognosis factors, root canal treatment decisions, or analgesic prescription practices. Conclusion:Dental students demonstrated a moderate level of knowledge regarding traumatic dental injury management, with knowledge and clinical competence improving with advancing academic level. However, deficiencies in emergency management protocols and limited clinical training persist, especially among junior students. Strengthening undergraduate education through structured teaching, hands-on workshops, and clinical training on dental trauma is recommended to improve preparedness and patient outcomes.
