Abstract

In Pakistani Urdu short story, the feudal system has consistently remained a subject of discussion as a significant social, economic, and political issue. Short story writers have realistically portrayed the various facets of this system and the resulting class, societal, and human issues. In a feudal society, land is not merely a source of economic resources; it becomes the primary vehicle for power, social status, and political influence. By maintaining a firm grip on land, wealth, and political power, the feudal class seeks to subjugate weaker and marginalized groups, particularly peasants and laborers—to its own interests, thereby deepening the class divide within society. In Pakistani Urdu short fiction, the feudal mindset is not limited to economic exploitation and land ownership; it also profoundly affects human relationships, social values, individual freedom, self-respect, and social justice. To maintain its dominance, the powerful class often employs political influence, social pressure, traditional customs, and various forms of coercion, whereas the weaker class—hampered by economic dependency, deprivation, and fear, lacks the capacity for effective resistance. Through a blend of realism and techniques such as symbolism, metaphor, satire, allegory, and characterization, writers have highlighted the internal structure of the feudal system, its class-based mentality, and its impact on human lives and society. In these stories, peasants and laborers are not merely passive victims. they represent a class that, despite enduring constant exploitation, injustice, and deprivation, aspires to secure its fundamental rights and a better life. Thus, the narrative of the feudal system in Pakistani Urdu short stories does not merely reflect an economic or political structure; rather, it illuminates the dynamics of power and powerlessness, ruler and ruled, and the wealthy and the poor. Overall, these stories play a significant literary role in awakening social consciousness against feudal exploitation, highlighting class-based injustices, and underscoring the need for human freedom, equality, self-respect, and a just social order.
