Abstract

Myth (Mythak in Hindi) is one of the earliest and most enduring forms through which human beings have attempted to understand themselves, nature, and the mysterious forces surrounding existence. Even in the modern scientific age, when the causes of natural phenomena are understood rationally, human beings continue to experience nature through wonder, emotion, imagination, and symbolic consciousness. This paper examines myth as an expression of human consciousness, particularly its relationship with nature, imagination, the unconscious mind, culture, language, and literary expression. The study argues that myth cannot simply be dismissed as an irrational or imaginary narrative. Rather, it represents the accumulated experiences, beliefs, aspirations, fears, and creative imagination of communities. In the Indian context, myth is closely associated with the cultural consciousness expressed through Vedic literature, nature worship, symbolic representations, and the development of concepts of divinity. The paper also examines the psychological dimension of myth through the idea of wish fulfilment and the unconsciousness. Further, it explores the transformation of myth across historical periods and its continuing relevance as a means of expressing human sensibility. Myth thus emerges as a dynamic cultural phenomenon through which abstract experiences are transformed into concrete symbols, narratives, and artistic forms
